My name is Samantha/Sam/Sammy and I love photography. I’ve been obsessed with it for as long as I can remember. I can remember being unusually drawn to how the old black and white photos my mom had when she was a little girl from back in the 60s looked. I realized I loved how time was captured in something that could last for generations.
I took a lot of courses throughout high school that offered me decent amounts of access to a dark room that allowed me to develop some skills. In 2006 I moved to NYC because honestly I had become bored with my hometown, Atlanta, the only place I’d ever lived.
I started shooting all kinds of photos around the city with my pocket sized point and shoot camera. I became completely dedicated to the “portable” camera since I could toss it in my bag easily and whip it out when I wanted. During all of this craziness I met my better half when I picked up swing dancing, Alex. He was the dreamy tech guy genius, and I soon learned that he always had the latest of the late awesome tech and camera stuff. It’s actually he who seriously spurred my interest in photography again.
In late 2009, after our time in NYC drew to a close, we sold everything that couldn’t fit inside of suitcases or at my parents’ house in Atlanta (yes…everything) and left the US. We moved to Hong Kong to escape the market crash, and to get to see life and adventure of living abroad. After a few months in Hong Kong we invested in a DSLR camera to document our time away as well as learn about a camera neither one of us had ever used.
The more chances I got to play around with the new camera and lenses we acquired, the more my rusty photography skills started coming back to me, and I wanted to make this a reality instead of just a pastime. Coming back to the US and trying to piece together how to run a photography business was so foreign to me that I started doing some research and that’s how I found Leah and Mark back in May. I applied for the first time, insanely excited and anxious, however I didn’t get the internship.
Fast forward to today, and here I am! I’m hoping to really submerge myself during this 3 month internship and absorb as much information and experiences as I can. I really want to push myself to do things I didn’t think I could and see what results I get, good or bad, it doesn’t matter as long as I’m shooting. I have an amazing fianceé, and family, who support me 200% or more to make this happen.
Aside from photography I have a TON of other interests. I’m a World of Warcraft geek and proud of it. I’m terribly shy until you get me to open up. I love Japanese anime and sushi (not necessarily together or in that order) and my favorite character is Totoro from Tonari no Totoro. I like to save my movie ticket stubs, and I’ve been collecting them since 2000. I have an insatiable sweet tooth and a passion for baking anything that’s red velvet. So check me out, Sam, as one of Leah and Mark’s Season 6 interns!
