Get To NO Fast | Don’t be Overwhelmed | Vlog

Whether you’re just beginning to plan your wedding or you’re deep in the weeds – you may eventually start to feel overwhelmed by all of the things that the Wedding Industrial Complex is trying to sell you.

Don’t be fooled! Fight Consumerism! Damn the Man!

Nah just kidding.

If you know anything about me – I believe you should like what you like and love what you love – no matter what (unless you like ummm, cannibalism… But even then it’s more of a case-by-case basis with me.)

SO. How do you avoid getting overwhelmed? One tip that may help is to simply reduce your options. Stop looking at everything – specifically all the things you’re going never going to choose anyways. It’s easy. Just say… No no no no no no no no no no. Get rid of all of the options you know you don’t want or like. That’ll leave you with only the YES or maybe options – and then you can go on and ROCK YOUR WEDDING PLANNING.

And if you need help – let me know.

Alright. If I don’t see you on your day – have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later.

The Best Way to Identify Bad Wedding Photographers | Vlog

One of the questions you’ll want to ask any wedding photographer you’re considering – is simply “Can we view a complete and full wedding gallery you’ve photographed?”

This is also one of the best ways to separate the good photographers from the really bad photographers (or the ones that are at least not as good.)

The truth is that a wedding portfolio will obviously have THE BEST photos that the photograph

Summerour Studio; Atlanta Wedding Venue; Review

Beautiful Arches and Ivy and Brick and Stone everywhere

er wants to show off – but that’s usually 1 ormaybe2 photos from each wedding. What you want to see is how they handle THE ENTIRE DAY – at least a few examples of complete weddings from start to finish.

There’s no hiding behind 1 or 2 great images if you’re seeing 400+ photos. Not only that – you’ll be able to see how that particular photographer handles different lighting conditions, different people, and different locations. Do all of their photos look like they could’ve been photographed anywhere (and not location specific? That may or may not be a good thing. If you picked a location because of a certain look – you’ll want that to be reflected in your photos.)

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark & Co. | The Foundry at Puritan Mill

Does that photographer use the exact same pose at EVERY WEDDING? Obviously there will be some overlap – but if you get the feeling that the photographer only has 2-3 poses and that’s it… You may not want that.

Selecting a wedding photographer is so much more than just their photos – but you want to make sure that their photos are at least as good as you need them to be. You want to make sure that they don’t just get lucky shots every now and then. You’re paying them good money and honestly – for the most part – their photos need to bemuch better than anything your guests can take. That’s why you’re hiring a professional photographer.

Alright. If I don’t see you on your day – have a great wedding – and I’ll talk to you later.

Caroline + Paul Wedding Preview | Vlog

I recently photographed Caroline & Paul’s wedding out in San Luis Obispo, California – and of course – the wedding was awesome! Caroline and Paul are awesome! Their friends and family are awesome!

And it’s been a while since I last photographed a wedding out in California – and ummmm, I have this thing where it just seems like California wedding photographers are cheating because they have SO MUCH GREAT scenery and varied landscapes to work with.

Of course – you want what you can’t have – I guess I’ll have to be content with just the normal amounts of f*cken amazing we have here in Georgia all the Southeast. YESsssss.

So. With that flight back from the west coast – I just edited a few photos on my phone but hey – what’s the difference these days right? Here’s the quick preview set.

Styled Wedding Shoot | Vlog | The Barn at Oak Manor

If you go through this blog (don’t) – you may notice that I almost never, ever, ever do styled shoots. Why? IDK. I’m too busy. They’re not my thing. Whatever – I just don’t do them and haven’t done them – like I said, almost never ever ever.

The way this one came about is because I was wanting to work with Brittani of Untitled Thoughts on a project – and somehow in her crazy mind she agreed to make five (5) dresses for me. A mini collection. But ummm, making five dresses is a big undertaking – especially THESE five dresses when you look at all of the fine hand embroidery done on them. Like a billion+ hours of manual labor went into each of her dresses. SO. I realized that I need to do more than just… photograph the dresses. I mean – I had to somehow make up for things on my side of the project you know?

So I contacted my friend Ashley over at the Barn at Oak Manor and she was kind enough to help us out and let us do the styled shoot there! With the dresses and the venue on board – I then just needed to find EVERYONE ELSE. Models, florals, decor, hair, makeup – a whole team. Right? Because the number of dresses already made sure that this wasn’t just going to be some small ‘couples’ styled shoot that could take place out in a park (free!)… You start somewhere and then keep going.

Dresses, venue, and then amazingly Courtney with Peachy Keen Decor signed on – and then and then and then… oh yeah and then I got some crazy idea that I also wanted artwork in this shoot (those peacock paintings you see in the photos.) So I collected some pieces from my friend Jennifer and even though we didn’t use them all – she was probably a little too trusting as she handed me her paintings… oh man. I just remember her saying – don’t pierce the canvas or you’re buying them. GULP!

Still. Hey. It worked out. Like Really. Worked. Out.

Thanks team.

How to Avoid Endless Awkward Open Speeches at Your Wedding | Vlog

Speeches and toasts are often some of the most heartfelt moments during wedding receptions. People saying nice things and share personal memories. It’s tricky though – sure things are pretty safe if it’s planned and your best man and maid of honor are giving their pre-written speeches. But what if you decide that you want to ‘open the floor’ to everyone to say a ‘few words’ or advice? What if… what if… WHAT IF?!

It might just be me – but I stress out about that part ALL THE TIME. What if there’s a big awkward lull and NO ONE WANTS TO SAY ANYTHING? Not only that – but HOW DO YOU END IT? Does it just stop and we acknowledge that no one wants to say anymore nice things?

Whew. Okay. Here’s how you make sure that it doesn’t get too weird.

You bring in a ringer. A speech ringer. You designate/tell/ask a friend or relative to be your speech closer. So when things feel like they’re ending or SHOULD end – that person will grab the mic or conch shell and Purposefully CLOSE IT OUT. Ending all speeches and moving onto the next thing (usually the cake cutting.)

Alright! Awkward moment averted!

Thank you.

Ha. Okay. If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later.

What About Transportation on Your Wedding Day? | Vlog

One of the things that many people forget to think about for their wedding day is their transportation. How are you going to get to everywhere you need to be? Where you are you getting ready? How will you go from there to the venue for your ceremony? What about after your ceremony over to where your reception is taking place?

Sure. It might be super easy if everything is taking place in one location – but if it’s not – you need to think about all the in-betweens. Home to the salon to home to the church to the reception to the hotel. That’s a lot right there!

Atlanta Wedding Photography | LeahAndMark & Co. | Sawyer Family Farmstead

And then if you have a large wedding party – and you’re planning on everyone traveling together – will everyone fit? Will YOU fit with your gigantic poofy wedding dress? Maybe. Maybe not. You should probably make SURE that you all will in fact fit in whatever vehicle is moving you and your team from place to place!

Uber? Taxi? MAKE SURE it’s a large vehicle. Make Sure Make Sure Make Sure.

Your transportation is easily something you can lock down and plan for before your wedding day – so take a few minutes and make the proper arrangements. Or – you know – make your maid of honor/best man take care of that for you. Sounds like a job they should be able to handle right? Hopefully. Ha. Of course they can handle that!

Along with all of that – make sure you have your getaway plan for the end of the night. After along day of wedding-things, you don’t want to have to worry about getting to your hotel room.

Alright! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later!

How to Help Your Stylists Give You Perfect Wedding Hair! | Vlog

Since I was getting my ‘hawk refreshed – I figured that I’d cover a few tips on helping out your stylist for your wedding hair!

A few months before your wedding – find a hairstylists and have a ‘trial’ session. If they’re a professional stylists – they’ll ask you questions to narrow down your ideas and get a better idea of what you want your hair to look like on your wedding day.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | The Estate on Piedmont | LeahAndMark & Co.

You will want to bring anything you can to the trial with you. Photos of your dress, and then also photos of you IN your dress as well. Having those will help your stylist get a better idea of how your hair will sit on your head with the dress on your body. Sounds like common sense right? And it is – but this is wedding stuff we’re talking about so common sense GOES OUT THE WINDOW! Cause you know – weddings are bonkers!

Bring any photos you’ve gathered as well for ‘hair’ inspiration – and then also any colors, or fabrics or really anything you might want your stylist to incorporate somehow into your hair for that day.

Another good idea is to make sure you know what you DON’T WANT. That’s almost as important as knowing what you do want – and it’ll cut down on the wasted time of going through bad ideas that you were never going to like in the first place 🙂

Alright! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later!

How Long Do Wedding Photos Take? | Vlog

You spent all that money on an amazing wedding photographer – so here’s my biggest piece of advice – SCHEDULE TIME FOR WEDDING PHOTOS.

Make the time in your schedule.

Just like anything else you really want to make time for on your wedding day – like the ceremony. Even if you don’t really want to take photos – if you hired a professional wedding photographer – get your money’s worth. And in order to do that, you have to make the time for photos. You should make enough time so that your photographer has the space and room to do THEIR WORK.

Atlanta Photographer | LeahAndMark & Co. | Phoenix Weddings | Desert

How long should wedding photos take? The short version? 1 hour and 17 minutes.

The long version?

Thirty (30) minutes for your first look/portrait session. Thirty (30) minutes for the family formals. And 17 minutes for the wedding party photos. Sure those times can blur and bend – but not the portrait session. It’s a minimum of 30 minutes blocked off for the portrait session. Give your photographer at least that much time if not longer. 45 minutes is great! I wouldn’t even know what to do if I had an entire hour! My head would probably explode!

So there you have it. That’s how much time it takes for wedding photos!

Alright! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later!

Planning for the Groomsmen Getting Ready Photos | Vlog

When it comes to the getting ready photos for the grooms side – we honestly, truthfully… probably don’t need to be there for 3 hours. I know. This is your first time. Don’t worry it’s okay!

How much time do we need? Probably 20 minutes. Seriously. Maybe 30 minutes tops.

Why? Because usually they’re not spending an hour + for hair and makeup and everything else. What we like to do is just the last 20 minutes of the groom getting ready – and hopefully he’s already showered and has his pants on. And then we photography the finishing touches – putting on his tie, suspenders, jacket, all that stuff. You know – the details. Even if we’re not there WHEN IT HAPPENS. We can arrive and he can fake it. And we can shoot it – and no one really knows or remembers or cares. Right?

And then we photography the guys/grooms people hanging out and stuff – but honestly… they’re usually not doing much. Like, not much. SO yeah!

But really – whatevs man! We’ll photograph whatever you want us to photograph because, well – THAT’S OUR JOB.

Okay! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later!

The REAL REASON Why You Need a Wedding Videographer | Vlog

Wedding Videography!

Okay. I know – wedding videography is usually an after thought, or 2nd thought, or never thought. But really – come on – it’s important. Why? Because.

Even if you don’t hire a professional wedding videographer – you should do it for the speeches and toasts. Sure, recording the ceremony is OBVIOUS. Duh. But what’s not so obvious is recording all of the speeches and toasts.

Atlanta Traveling Wedding Photographer

I know – my photos do in fact ‘capture’ that part of the evening – but not in the same what that video captures it. Plus. Let’s talk about this part. We won’t have everyone forever. Sometimes, depending on who’s speaking – those people won’t be with us very long, or anymore, or whatever. You know what I mean. Say a grand parent gets up and says some amazing words. Or a parent. Or ANYONE. VIDEO IT.

Even if it’s just phone video. Even if it’s just voice recorded. (although – phone video is SO EASY) – have SOMEONE VIDEO THE SPEECHES. You’ll miss them if you don’t.

Oh – and hire a professional wedding videographer cause they make cool stuff and you’ll wish you did. Trust me. You’ll wish you did.

Alright! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later.

Rehearsal Dinner Advice YOU NEED | Vlog

Rehearsal Dinner!

What IS a rehearsal dinner? It’s often the more intimate dinner/gathering, taking place the night before your actual wedding.

The day before your actual wedding – you may have an actual ‘wedding rehearsal’. After that – you go to dinner. Who goes to that dinner? Your wedding party (the people that attended the actual wedding rehearsal) – close friends, family, and then also, definitely – all the people that came in from out of town. They probably arrived the day before your wedding – which means that they’re not doing anything that evening – except coming to hangout with you.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | | Vintage | Modern | High Museum of Art Atlanta | Atlanta Botanical Gardens | W Hotel Midtown

Plus – you know – at your wedding they’ll only get to see you for like 4.6 minutes of the entire evening. So the rehearsal dinner is a great way to spend a little bit more time with some of the people you actually, really like.

Also. Hey. You can do whatever you want for the rehearsal dinner. You rent out a restaurant, an event space – or someone’s backyard. You have all the flexibility in the world with your rehearsal dinner – there aren’t too many rights and wrongs – and if there are – F*ck it all! It’s your wedding day!

How to Avoid Ugly & Stiff Wedding Photos | Vlog

If you’re like normal people and you’re not very comfortable in front of a camera, you may be wondering – how are things going to be on your wedding day? Don’t worry! That’s why you hire a professional wedding photographer!

That’s totally their job. That’s what I do. It’s kind of my thing.

We’ll run you through a series of motions and setups. Everything is inhow you do it.We won’t put you in front of ‘things’ and just say stand in front of this, stand in front of this, now stand in front of this. Be Boring be boring be boring. NO. Never. | Atlanta Wedding Photographers

There are lots of different tricks. For example – just being ready. I’ll have you two looking at each other, staring all loving like, and then I’ll get ready – and then say ‘hey, look at me’ – CLICKCLICKCLICK and then you can stop looking at me cause that’s um, AWKWARD for me too! ha.

Yeah. You don’t need to stare at me for 5 minutes. Right? Right.

Oh yeah – and you should always always always feel very comfortable giving your photographer your photo ideas and suggestions. Even if that photographer is an ARTISTE! F*ck that. You hired them. Work with them – and they should be open to your ideas.

For me – it’s always quicker and faster for me to make the best attempt at your photo idea, than to think too hard about whether or not we should even take the photo. Like… let’s DO THIS! And then we’ll sort it out later you know? Right.

Okay! If I don’t see you on your day, have a great wedding and I’ll talk to you later!
