My Kind of Town | by +Krista

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been sort of busy: and the best kind of busy at that: busy traveling! When I started the LeahAndMark internship a million years ago- and even more so when I officially joined the LeahAndMark family a few months later- I knew I’d probably stay busy. (Which is awesome and kind of my thing- I just prefer to stay busy. Also. I prefer having an excuse as to why I’m always behind on laundry.) Busy, yes. Traveling, I only hoped. (Because guess what? Traveling is kind of my other thing.) And this summer, I checked off two cities I’d always hoped I’d get to see: Boston and Chicago. And I’ve even been able to see places I hadn’t necessarily thought to include on my list- places like Iowa. Because guess what again? Iowa is surprisingly beautiful. Says the city girl who prefers crowds to clouds.

I’d always pictured Iowa as huge farmland, stretching as far as you could see in all directions. Yellow fields. Blue skies. Barns and farmhouses and horses. And corn. Lots and lots of corn.

So after Mark and I landed in Chicago, zipped into downtown, and Instagrammed atop the Sears/ Willis Tower (because we’re photographers and we Instagram- true artists of our craft), we drove across Illinois and into Iowa.

Driving, I realized that what I’d imagined Iowa to look like was, in fact, completely true. Really. Farmland for miles and miles, in every direction around you. Blue skies. Yellow fields. (Soybeans!) And yes- there’s a lot of corn. But it’s beautiful and actually took my breath away. Easily in the top five of the most beautiful places my eyes have ever seen.

It’s funny. As a photographer, you know you’re going to learn something new every single day. Sometimes it’s a new lighting technique. A shortcut in your editing maybe. Sometimes you learn about the perks of flying first class. (Twice! Thanks, Mark!) Or sometimes, you learn that, as much as you may love one thing (a place, a city, a favorite bench in the park), beauty is unexpectedly hiding in places and things you’d never really thought about before. And adventure is hiding too. You just have to be open to discovering/ seeing/ experiencing new things. New places. New moments. New adventures.

If I kept myself closed off, I’d miss so much. SO MUCH. Life. Family. Marriage and babies an houses and vacations. Traveling. Adventure. Lessons and mistakes. Places. Cities. Fields of yellow soybeans pressed against perfect blue skies. Mimosas in first class. And shooting these amazing, beautiful weddings that continue to take my breath away.

Atlanta. Wedding. Photographer. Chicago. Iowa. Travel.

Last weekend was Ronnie & Brent’s wedding here in Atlanta! They received the most votes during our WOW Wedding contest and honestly – everything was pretty amazing. Last summer when we came up with the idea of giving away a full wedding to some lucky couple – we had no idea that it might possibly be anywhere near as awesome as what transpired last Sunday.

Now I knew that we had assembled some of Atlanta’s best wedding industry veterans to work with us – but damn – everyone was particularly badass. Honest.

Since we’ve been flying all over the country lately for weddings and engagement sessions – having the best wedding planner/show runner was near the top of our list as far as things we wanted and needed. Fortunately, Leah Bilz of The Whole Shebang ATL took care of everything. And I mean everything. Once it was announced that Ronnie & Brent were the contest winners, Leah took it from there and rounded up all of the vendors, put us in our places, coordinated with Ronnie & Brent on their preferences and all of a sudden, like magic – the wedding day was upon us and everything went perfectly. You know – because that’s exactly why you hire a badass wedding planner right?

Everything – from the venue at 56 East, to the food from Endive Catering, to the DJ and Videography by Lethal Rhythms Entertainment – was perfect and flawless. From the bridesmaid’s hair and makeup done at Van Michael Salon, to their dress and the suits provided by Anya bridal and Saavi Formal Wear – I feel like we all worked really hard to make this the best day possible for Ronnie & Brent.

Oh and hey – ALL of the floral and event design was done by Ciao Bella Weddings – and WOW did it look amazing.

Did I mention the desserts? Sugar Lily bakery provided the favors that you see on the tables in the photos – and Miss Mamie Cakes is responsible for the wedding cake and the ridiculously cool ARMADILLO CAKE! (Just scroll down and check out the photos!)

And of course we can’t forget to thank our media sponsors over at 11Alive! and Equally Wed! and Scoutmob! And our best friends over at Wedding Day Hooray!

So even though we’re in Atlanta, Georgia – and the laws are what they are – hey – sometimes dudes marry other dudes. Get over it.

Ronnie & Brent – You. Are. Awesome.

5 Things About Your Wedding Photographer

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Rustic | Modern | Destination

– Posted by Mark

If you’re in the market for a wedding photographer (or you’ve already hired one) – then you’ve probably noticed that there are A LOT OF US OUT THERE. Not only that – but there are way too many incredibly talented and truly amazing shooters, all of them wanting your business. Beyond the awesome photos, beyond the great personalities – there are probably a few things that you don’t really know about wedding photographers, and possibly about your wedding photographer in particular. So we’re here to let you in on a few things you may not know.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Rustic | Modern | Destination

1. You Wedding Photographer can do anything.

In fact – they will DO Anything – as long as you tell them that it’ll be a really cool shot (and they agree) – or if you just tell them that it’s impossible. IMPOSSIBLE! Reverse psychology works too well on us. Tell us we can’t do something and we’ll do our best to prove you wrong. It’s not that we have a need to win – we just need to show off – especially photographically. So hey – having a beach wedding? You know what the ‘impossible’ shot is? The one that requires the photographer to get waist deep IN THE WATER. On your wedding day. With no change of clothes.

2. Your Wedding Photographer doesn’t need to feel inspired.

When you hire a Professional Wedding Photographer – you’re hiring someone who essentially says “F*ck being inspired”. Because while other people wait to feel inspired – professionals get to work. And that’s what we do on your wedding day. We work.  All of those artistic and beautiful photos are a product of us working and not from us feeling inspired. We don’t depend on inspiration because inspiration isn’t dependable.

3. Your Wedding Photographer knows that you’re the boss.

The only people with ultimate authority over everything during your wedding are you and your partner. You two are the boss. Not your mom, not your aunt, no one else other than the two people getting married. While they will field requests and pretend to listen to suggestions from anyone else – in the end, your wedding photographer only listens to the choices and decisions you make. Of course a part of our job is to make everyone happy – but not at the cost of your own happiness on your wedding day! Which leads us to number 4…

4. Your Wedding Photographer takes care of you.

Our job is to make sure that you look good in your wedding photos (sure along with all of that other flowery stuff like being your friend, capturing emotion, connecting, telling your story, blah blah blah). The easiest way to make sure you look good in your photos is to simply make sure you have a good time. Which includes doing everything we can to make things easier. To fill in the gaps. To make suggestions. To fix things.

Most importantly – when you’re with us – we don’t want you having to really think about anything in terms of your photos. You hired us to do a job. We call ourselves Professional Wedding Photographers – so we should know how to handle anything that comes up. Or at the very least – we should pretend. Because honestly – we’re the ones who attend 30 weddings a year and we should know what should go on, what can go on, and then if you need help – we can give you a few choices and/or suggestions.
PLUS. Wedding photographers are very protective of their clients. We’re not going to let anything ruin your day. Because that would mess up our photos 😉

It’s true.

10 Photography Business Resolutions for 2012

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Modern

– Posted by Mark

Since my personal life and business life are closely related/largely the same – these resolutions work for both – or the appropriateness goes back and forth.

1. Read more. Read Again. Over the past two years I’ve read… a lot of books – and most of them not about photography – and we make it a general rule to avoid photography ‘business’ books. We read for new ideas. Photography business books generally have none of those. These are a list of books we’ve already read and some we want to read. I never read so much in my life until I started this photography business.

A quick note about being different. It’s very difficult. Especially around photographers.

2. Do that damn accounting – and keep it up all year long.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Modern

3. Buy No New Gear.

Seriously. We have lots of cameras. We have lots of lenses. I’ve essentially been on a shopping spree the past two years. Too many lights. Too many batteries. And there is always some other piece of gear that we could buy/need. It’s endless. So how about it. No New Gear this year.

4. Work Harder. And Harder. And Smarter. And stop wasting time. Did I mention working harder?

5. Really work on our Social Media Marketing.

There is so much more we can be doing. It’s not ‘free’ either. It takes a lot of time. Sure you can simplify things – but the fact is that the most expensive cost of ‘social media marketing’ – is the number of hours you end up spending to keep ‘posting’ everywhere. Even if you only select a few channels, you’re still spending a fair amount of time on the upkeep. Because it’s all a conversation – and keeping up a conversation requires that you pay attention to who you’re communicating with. So yeah. This year we’re going to start focusing a good bit more on our social media marketing. Finally.

6. Be Nicer to all of the Interns and +Photographers.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Modern

7. Work the Interns and +Photographers much harder.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | LeahAndMark.com | Vintage | Modern

9. Learn more about Photography. Learn more about editing. Learn more about selling and the sales process. Learn more design. Learn more about operating a business.

10. Do More Things Differently. Because We Can.

11. OH – And get That Newsletter going again.

We have a great deal planned for the next few months. We’re doing a full wedding giveaway very soon, in a few weeks we’ll be taking applications for the next season of our Photography Internship, we’ll be traveling to Phoenix and the Bahamas for a few weddings – and BabyRoX is constantly growing and being awesome.

I know many other people make resolutions such as being more ‘balanced’ and not letting work takeover their lives. I’m not in that camp. Ever since BabyRoX was born back at the end of November, I’ve been largely here at home. I’ve been able to spend much more time with Leah and BabyRoX than I ever could have if I was still working my desk job. Photography is my life because it’s allowed me to really live my life – and that’s even more important now that I have a son. There is no way I’m turning things down and slowing everything just because I’m supposed to achieve some kind of moderate balance. We’re going all out because we don’t live like we’re dying, we don’t live like tomorrow is our last day. We live like we’re going to live a long exciting life. Living a long life isn’t difficult – but it takes a lot of work to keep it exciting – and I’m going to do whatever it takes.

Let’s. Go.
