Lauren + Dean | Engagement Session

Engagement Sessions!

Honesty – I don’t do the hard sell on engagement sessions. Some people want them. Some people don’t want them. Whatevs man.

Truth is though – you don’t have to look at it as an ENGAGEMENT SESSION. I tell everyone that you should just think of it as… a portrait session with just the two of you. The thing is that other than your thousands of professional photos on your wedding day – you won’t have any other professional photos of the two of you. They’ll all be selfies. Or from photobooths at other people’s weddings. You know it’s true.

So since you’re already hiring a wedding photographer – it’s a really simple thing to throw in an engagement session and get more photos of the two of you looking good. Because come on – it’s kind of weird for couples to be like… let’s get some professional photos of us for no reason.

Of course – you don’t need a reason. Other photographers will tell you that you should do it for you and how much your love yourself or… whatever.

This is Lauren and Dean. They’re engaged to get married. So we took some photos. We went all over the place. Grant Park. Jackson St. Bridge. and then Ponce City Market. Lots and lots of photos and lots of me bossing them around. Hold hands. Kiss. Makeout. Actively kiss. Stand there. Hipster hand hold. Etc.

Hey Lauren and Dean – thanks.

Yolanda + Zana | Summerour Wedding Preview

This is Yolanda and Zana.

Their wedding was great and [insert wedding photographer words about how they’re the coolest/sweetest/most eveything] – but what I want to talk about are Zana’s vows that she recited during the ceremony. I don’t remember exactly what she said (look I’m mostly so into my head about the photos that I don’t listen during ceremonies (except for when I hear ‘you can kiss’)) – but I remember thinking that Zana’s vows were probably the most well written, poetic, and heartfelt that I’ve heard in a long time. They hit me. And even though I kind of expected that from Zana – I was still surprised by how powerful her words were in expressing her love for Yolanda.

And that’s all I got about that.

It was a great day. Lots of love and emotion.

And even though I’m honored to be at all of my clients weddings; I am very honored that Yolanda and Zana had me at theirs.

Thank you.

Boudoir is an Adventure | by +Krista

Boudoir can be a lot of things. Glamorous. Romantic. Sexy. Empowering. (And also slightly terrifying. I know.) But most of all? Boudoir is an adventure. Seriously. The idea of it is still taboo to a lot of people, which I wholeheartedly understand but fiercely disagree with… because it shouldn’t be. It’s okay to dress up and be glamorous and sexy. (And really, it’s more than okay. I think it’s required. On [at least] an almost daily basis.) But to step outside of your comfort zone in such an in-your-face, no-holds-barred kind of way is the truest definition of an adventure. So it’s really awesome that I’m also continuously surprised at the number of women who, after it comes up in conversation, have actually been dying to do a boudoir shoot too… and just never gave themselves the permission to do it. Oh, I just really want to do that too because it looks like so much fun. And the thing is, it IS fun. And beautiful and empowering and all that jazz I talk about all the time.

My latest boudoir shoot was back at the W Hotel again, which is fast becoming my favorite spot for boudoir in the city. (The stairs in the lobby make me feel like Cinderella and the best papaya martini in existence lives here. Boom. Instant love.) This time, we got started early in the morning and the sunlight streaming in through those beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows was perfection. And my lovely client, who made my day when she said she was doing this for herself more than anyone else, got to jump in and have fun, feel empowered, be sexy. IN YOUR FACE.

She did awesome. Of course. Afterwards, I asked her if she was glad she’d done the boudoir thing. Because the idea of boudoir can be scary and just a little intimidating, I always ask this question. I really want to know. Even more so than making beautiful photos that make my clients feel good damn good about themselves, it’s my goal to make sure they’re glad they did this, even (or especially) if it was a little daunting. Because if you’re going to toe the edge of an adventure, then jump in with eyes open, it better be worth it. She was SO glad she’d done it, she said. And guess what? You’d be glad too.

Adventure Awaits | Alex & Brett

One of the greatest compliments a photographer can ever receive is a recommendation. It’s huge, really. To go out on a limb and vouch for someone, with enough faith in someone’s talent or ability and about something so personal as art, is just awesome… and humbling. I’ve been lucky enough, in my journey as a photographer, to have met such incredible people that turn into clients- fun, funny, kind- and then those clients’ friends become my clients too. AWESOME. To anyone who has ever gone out on that limb for me, thank you. So much.

Alex and Brett are freaking adorable. And they’re having a baby! Alex has the most perfect basketball belly, the two of them are seriously cute as a button together, and when I suggested a sunrise session for their maternity photos (SUNRISE. As in leaving the house when it’s still dark out and readying yourself for photos at six o’clock in the morning.), they were ALL OVER IT. It was actually the first time I ever even suggested a sunrise session to any client, ever, and Alex and Brett set the precedent by being game for anything. And because it was sunrise, the lighting was some of the most gorgeous I’ve worked with in the history of Ever.

Maternity sessions are so interesting to me- especially for first babies. Every couple has a certain dynamic all their own, and when you add a baby, everything shifts. Your whole life- your entire existence, really- is about to change, and in so many bigger ways than just who has diaper duty. For a lot of couples, it’s your first big adventure together. And even if you’ve been adventuring together already- first homes and new careers and travels abroad- parenthood is undoubtedly the biggest, craziest adventure you two will ever tackle. (Really. Even getting out of the house somewhere in the neighborhood of being on time is an adventure. But worth it. Because babies are cute.) I love watching the giddiness of couples who are about to have a baby. It’s this nervous energy, tripping over baby clothes and baby shoes and big decisions. You’re savoring the last few weeks or months of it being just the two of you… and [im]patiently waiting for the biggest, most symbolic marker of your relationship: your baby. I remember those days. And watching the person you love become a mother or a father often brings back that flood of dizzying new love that you first felt way back Before Baby: in the very beginning. It’s kind of cool. You get to fall in love all over again, only multiplied by about a million. (And with extra pints of Häagen-Dazs. Very important.)

Alex and Brett, thank you for trusting me with something so important as capturing the last few weeks while your sweet girl is still cozied up on the inside. Don’t forget to pack a fan for your hospital stay, guys. 🙂 You. Are. Awesome.

Back in the ATL

I’m back in Atlanta after a whirlwind trip to Phoenix, which for the most part was great.  It was wonderful to reconnect with so many of my Phoenix friends, even though I still didn’t get to see everyone I wanted to!  But lots of excitement indeed at seeing Brandy’s new house, feeling Skye’s first contractions, seeing the new and improved HomeBase (where I used to work), and marveling at Melanie’s adorable, entertaining genius of a daughter.  Oh!  And dinner and Wii with Mark’s familia was awesome.  Great food, thanks to Myra and Mark’s mom.  Ryan is a rockstar at the Wii games.  And Mark’s BFF Amy always cracks me up.  I love all y’all!!  Can’t wait to see you in December, this time with Mark in tow.

I had the video camera, not the digital one, so you’ll have to wait for a Video Spectacular later!

Last night we went to a party!  Cuz we are fancy party people.  That pic up there is the view of the city from our new friends’, Ramit and Madhura’s, balcony.  Pretty cool, huh?  It was a little scary at first, but then we got used to it.  Well, sort of.  Mark didn’t really get totally used to being up on the 28th Floor…

Wheee.  We’re high in the sky.  We got to spy on all the pretentious folks at the W strutting around and trying to feel cool.  Oh, if you were at the W Midtown last night, that doesn’t apply to you.  Just everyone else.

It was a fun night.  Lots of good food, too!  Homemade hummus, delicious Indian nibbles that made me miss wandering around Delhi and Varanasi, and lots of nice new people to converse with.  I even found another White American Person that can speak Chinese!  Really well!  We like how people think we’re all cool for speaking Chinese when in actuality it’s a way easier language than French or Spanish.  Hah.  But go ahead and think we’re totally awesome.  We don’t mind.

Alright- time to get ready for a day at the lake.  Ciao!
