Kristen + Martin | Las Vegas Destination Wedding

Las Vegas; Destination Wedding; Hartland Mansion; Golden Nugget Hotel; Fremont Street Experience; Atlanta; Wedding; Photographer;

I’ve literally known Kristen for something like 47 years – so it was a real honor to be there to photograph her destination wedding with Martin – IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA! We (me and Kristen) grew up in Phoenix – so Las Vegas was never very far – but I actually haven’t ever photographed a wedding there – until now!

Kristen is actually one of my oldest friends (because you know – I don’t have many friends and that’s a whole other story) so… I honestly would’ve attended the wedding anyway – even if she hadn’t hired me to be her photographer 😉

BUT – if you’ve ever heard me talk about it – I would always rather be photographing a friend’s wedding than simply attend it. Because come on! If I’m photographing the wedding then I get to hangout with the couple ALL DAY LONG. Not only that – but I get to pull them away from people, I get their attention, ME ME ME ME. Right? ha.

Compared to if I just attend the wedding – sure I get to eat the food and party and stuff – but I maybe get 3-8 minutes talking to the couple. And that’s cool…. BUT NOT AS COOL AS BEING THEIR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER!

It was only a few months earlier that I photographed Kristen’s sister’s wedding (Melissa + Dan) down in Phoenix, Az. – so it was also an added bonus of getting to hangout with her family twice in a short span of a few months. And any wedding photographer will tell you that it’s always great to hangout with clients that you already know. Because… you really do end up feeling like a part of the family. We stayed at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino – and their wedding took place at The Hartland Mansion and Wedding Chapel. Now that venue – it’s… all kinds of amazing. A total ‘Classic Vegas’ vibe circa Elvis circa Liberace feel – complete with lots and lots of candelabras…

Of course – being an Atlanta Wedding Photographer – it was a real treat to be able to fly out and photograph something a little different than what I’m used to – specifically photos on Las Vegas at night time! After their wedding we headed over a few blocks to Fremont street for the Fremont Street Experience (which is like… day time at night) – so lots of lights, lots of loud music, lots of drunk and not drunk people – you know – downtown Las Vegas. And that’s where we did another portrait session with the two of them because come on – when you have a destination wedding in Las Vegas – you NEED those night time portrait session photos right? Or else it’s just… desert photos, or casino photos or… IDK – but it seems like any wedding set wouldn’t be complete without some night time photos with all the lights and the lights and the lights. Did I mention the lights?

Kristen and Martin – You. Are. Awesome.

If you’re like we were before we became wedding photographers – the idea making plans for something a year in advance is kind of crazy, impractical and impossible. Especially when you consider that most of us have a hard time making actual plans for next week nevermind trying to plan something for next year.

So Yeah. All of a sudden we found ourselves contractually committing to working on certain dates, over a year away. I already have regular amounts of commitment issues – so this was kind of a big deal. At least I thought it was – because apparently it’s not a big deal – especially when you travel as much as we have over the past year for weddings all over the country. Somewhere between when they hired us and their planned wedding in Ann Arbor, Michigan – things changed for Valerie and Jesse and they ended up flying to San Francisco and eloping!

Fortunately for us they were still having their reception, and they still wanted me to photograph everything 🙂

This was actually the Saturday before Faith & Jeromy’s Sunday wedding that took place in Northern Georgia. So I flew up to Detroit on Friday evening, drove over to Ann Arbor to have a few beers with Valerie & Jesse, then I photographed them on Saturday! and then I flew back down to Georgia Sunday morning – immediately driving up to North Georgia from the airport.

It seems like our wedding schedule this fall has been consistently that crazy and hectic. A short recap on our wedding travels this year:

[Huntsville, Alabama] [Ojai, California] [Miami, Florida] [Califon,New Jersey] [Bethel, Maine] [New York, New York] [Charlotte, North Carolina] [Wilmington, North Carolina] [Columbia, South Carolina] [Ann Arbor, Michigan]

On Saturday morning Valerie + Jesse & Co. visited a local cider mill! And had cider and freshly baked donuts and more cider and wine. YES. BTW. Ann Arbor in the FALL?! Ridiculously awesome. Wine in the morning? We should do that more often. Wedding reception in the evening? Always a good idea. More drinking? Absolutely. But what’s even better? The DANCING. And let me tell you – when you scroll down and get to THE DANCING I think you’ll see a few moves that you’ve never seen before. It was that awesome.

Valerie & Jesse, thanks for having me be a part of your awesome party. You’re the best ever. No really, I mean it. (Just don’t check to see if I say that to every couple.)

Seriously. Thank you so very much. You. Are. Awesome.

HP + Glynn Preview

From the very beginning, Leah and I set out to attract clients that we like working with. We share a lot of ourselves online – and one of the main reasons is so that clients get a feeling of who we are as people – and not simply photographers. We tell our Interns that you shouldn’t try to compete on photos alone, or by simply charging the lowest rates.

Once you feel like your photos are up to par, you should compete by attracting clients who get what you’re all about.

Heather found us through our write up on Offbeat Bride – and never looked back. Nevermind the fact that at the time we had only photographed two weddings, had been in business for about 6 months, AND the part where she lives in the small town of Valparaiso, Indiana (Valpo!) and we live in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the past year we’ve been able to build this business with lots of help from many people who simply took a leap of faith to hire us.

Heather was not only our first out-of-town booking, but our first out-of-state booking. Every wedding photographer says they’re ‘available for travel’ – but making that leap from local weddings to being flown out of state can be elusive. We weren’t expecting to book so many weddings up and down the east coast, but once Heather hired us – it’s like the dam broke and all of a sudden we were booked for Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois, North Carolina, and more…

Our time with Heather & Glynn was also a little different because we actually stayed with Heather & Glynn at their house. I know. Who does that?

I blame it on my being a bit naive at first – and offering to save them some money by giving them the option of boarding us instead of paying for our hotel room. Hey – if you’ve ever been backpacking in a foreign country and made friends with people who invited you into their home, this doesn’t seem so strange. Except we’re in America and Americans have a very difficult time accepting such behavior from relatively complete strangers.

So after realizing what I had done, we decided to just trust that Heather & Glynn were the type of clients that we wanted, and everything would be great.

And they were, and it was.

After Heather booked us, I decided that from then on it was probably better to just always stay in a hotel instead of with the family. So I knew this trip would definitely be unique – and we would be spending much more time than usual with the bride and groom and their family. So of course, we photographed everything.

And hey – did you know that Leah’s pretty great at wrapping ribbon around the bouquet stems? See?!

And babysitting!

Yeah. We’re kind of all purpose photographers. Need help planning out your ceremony? Check. Need help with the ceremony seating layout? Check. (Of course, we’re partly responsible for the ‘theater-in-the-round’ setup for their ceremony as you will see later when the official photos get posted. Hey, Leah and I both did theater alright?!)

This window areas is in their home! And hey – you know about us + light.

Thank you.
