Baby Shower by +Raven

I have no idea if I want to have kids or not. Sometimes it seems really awesome, and other times it seems really miserable. I do think that being pregnant is pretty fantastic {if you’re happy, anyway}, and the whole miracle-of-life thing is pretty mind-blowing.

I like coming up for names for my kids who may or may not ever exist, though. And I’ve gone through some awesome stages of naming, let me tell you. Aurora. Ezekiel. Algernon {yup}. Cassandra. Samantha. Max {for a girl}. Charis. Fatima. MarkRoX. Tzipporah. Jakob. Rebekah. Corbin. Morgaine.

I still like most of those.

Atlanta, Indian, Baby, Shower, Wedding, Photographer, +Raven, Atlanta Indian Wedding PhotographerI hated my name when I was a kid. When you’re a kid, you don’t want to be different. You don’t want to have a weird name. You want to be named Kathryn and have people call you Kat or Kitty, because it’s stupidly cute, and you want people to think you’re stupidly cute. You think it’s silly that your first name plus your middle name rhymes with your last name. You think all sorts of dumb things when you’re a kid.

I grew out of it, thankfully, and I love my name, now. I’m so grateful to my parents for giving me a unique name. It really fits who I am, and who I wanted to grow into. People remember my name when they hear it. Nevermind the countless times when people slip into calling me Robin, simply because it’s another bird name {ugh}. Or Rachel, because it also starts with an “R.” Also nevermind the people who change their name to Raven because it sounds more “hardcore” or “gothic” or some such.

Loving my name came only a few years before I really worked on loving myself. I think part of the reason I didn’t like my name was because I didn’t like myself; didn’t like who I was; didn’t like that I wanted to be something else. Someone else.

But now, I love both. My name is part of who I am. It carries weight and meaning. It has a history, a past, a story all its own, one worth telling. And so do I.

Jenny + Abhineet | Wedding preview

We’ll get to the proper introductions later on. For now – Intern Gabriel has leveled up and this is +Gabriel’s first wedding post with us – and WOW – he’s really pulling out all the stops. He was photographing this wedding in Goldsboro, N.C. while I was photographing a wedding in Wilmington, N.C. – We cannot express how happy we are to have +Gabriel working with us here at LeahAndMark.com

I have always prided myself at being able to emotionally connect to my photos. What I didn’t understand was that there are a million other photographers out there who do the Exact. Same. Thing. That was a big let down for me at first, because I REALLY do love the emotion in my photography, and thought that it in and of itself was unique.

My time as an intern with LeahAndMark opened my eyes to a whole new world of photography. I had previously told myself that all the ways that I wasn’t shooting was by preference, that I just didn’t want to shoot that way. The truth is, that I just had never taken the time to learn those different ways, and I was shooting myself in the foot because of it.

My photography has changed drastically over the past 3 months. I think of things differently, I SEE things differently. And I can only hope that change continues to progress and find its ways into other areas that I am not as comfortable with.

I still have an emotional connection with my photos. I really feel that each one tells an important story, and that is what I want to do with my photography. The difference now is that I do everything I can to tell those stories from a perspective that not everyone else is telling it from.

These pictures are from Abhineet and Jenny’s wedding in Goldsboro, NC. The wedding was a traditional Hindu Indian wedding and it was awesome. I know that nearly every post you read about a wedding includes a line from the photographer saying it was awesome. But really.

It. Was. Awesome.
