Barn at Oak Manor Wedding – If you go through this blog (don’t) – you may notice that I almost never, ever, ever do styled shoots. Why? IDK. I’m too busy. They’re not my thing. Whatever – I just don’t do them and haven’t done them – like I said, almost never ever ever.
The way this one came about is because I was wanting to work with Brittani of Untitled Thoughts on a project – and somehow in her crazy mind she agreed to make five (5) dresses for me. A mini collection. But ummm, making five dresses is a big undertaking – especially THESE five dresses when you look at all of the fine hand embroidery done on them. Like a billion+ hours of manual labor went into each of her dresses. SO. I realized that I need to do more than just… photograph the dresses. I mean – I had to somehow make up for things on my side of the project you know?
So I contacted my friend Ashley over at the Barn at Oak Manor and she was kind enough to help us out and let us do the styled shoot there! With the dresses and the venue on board – I then just needed to find EVERYONE ELSE. Models, florals, decor, hair, makeup – a whole team. Right? Because the number of dresses already made sure that this wasn’t just going to be some small ‘couples’ styled shoot that could take place out in a park (free!)… You start somewhere and then keep going.

Dresses, venue, and then amazingly Courtney with Peachy Keen Decor signed on – and then and then and then… oh yeah and then I got some crazy idea that I also wanted artwork in this shoot (those peacock paintings you see in the photos.) So I collected some pieces from my friend Jennifer and even though we didn’t use them all – she was probably a little too trusting as she handed me her paintings… oh man. I just remember her saying – don’t pierce the canvas or you’re buying them. GULP!
Still. Hey. It worked out. Like Really. Worked. Out.

I’ve literally known Kristen for something like 47 years – so it was a real honor to be there to photograph her destination wedding with Martin – IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA! We (me and Kristen) grew up in Phoenix – so Las Vegas was never very far – but I actually haven’t ever photographed a wedding there – until now!
Kristen is actually one of my oldest friends (because you know – I don’t have many friends and that’s a whole other story) so… I honestly would’ve attended the wedding anyway – even if she hadn’t hired me to be her photographer 😉
BUT – if you’ve ever heard me talk about it – I would always rather be photographing a friend’s wedding than simply attend it. Because come on! If I’m photographing the wedding then I get to hangout with the couple ALL DAY LONG. Not only that – but I get to pull them away from people, I get their attention, ME ME ME ME. Right? ha.
Compared to if I just attend the wedding – sure I get to eat the food and party and stuff – but I maybe get 3-8 minutes talking to the couple. And that’s cool…. BUT NOT AS COOL AS BEING THEIR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER!
Las Vegas, Nevada Destination Wedding Photographer
It was only a few months earlier that I photographed Kristen’s sister’s wedding (Melissa + Dan) down in Phoenix, Az. – so it was also an added bonus of getting to hangout with her family twice in a short span of a few months. And any wedding photographer will tell you that it’s always great to hangout with clients that you already know. Because… you really do end up feeling like a part of the family. We stayed at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino – and their wedding took place at The Hartland Mansion and Wedding Chapel. Now that venue – it’s… all kinds of amazing. A total ‘Classic Vegas’ vibe circa Elvis circa Liberace feel – complete with lots and lots of candelabras…
Of course – being an Atlanta Wedding Photographer – it was a real treat to be able to fly out and photograph something a little different than what I’m used to – specifically photos on Las Vegas at night time! After their wedding we headed over a few blocks to Fremont street for the Fremont Street Experience (which is like… day time at night) – so lots of lights, lots of loud music, lots of drunk and not drunk people – you know – downtown Las Vegas. And that’s where we did another portrait session with the two of them because come on – when you have a destination wedding in Las Vegas – you NEED those night time portrait session photos right? Or else it’s just… desert photos, or casino photos or… IDK – but it seems like any wedding set wouldn’t be complete without some night time photos with all the lights and the lights and the lights. Did I mention the lights?
When you’ve decided to hire ceremony musicians – you want to find someone who is very experienced playing weddings – not just in playing – but playing weddings specifically.
Do they have a list of music/songs that work really well for wedding ceremonies – that list will give you an idea of their experience – their knowledge – and the general, can they do what you want? Can they play what you want? Do they already have the sheet music for it? For example – a string quartet needs sheet music in order to play – and often times the sheet music isn’t available for popular songs you’ve heard on the radio.
So – someone – probably your musicians – are going to have to actually write that sheet music. I KNOW RIGHT? THAT’S SO PROFESSIONAL!
And if they can write the music – you know you’re working with badass musicians. Because not all musicians can actually WRITE music.
Alright – if we don’t see you on your day – have a great wedding and we’ll talk to you later.
(also – that’s Kat up there in the video with me – you can hire her and her team for your wedding! Over at Luna Strings!)
