47 Different Types of Wedding Cakes!*

Different Wedding Cake Types – Here’s the thing with wedding cake. Over the past 10 years of photographing weddings – and eating lots of wedding cake – there is A LOT OF AWFUL wedding cake. Seriously. So many wedding cakes that don’t taste good. So much money spent on bad bad bad tasting wedding cakes.

But the bright side of that is – there is also so much money that has been saved by buying… not fancy, not expensive wedding cakes… and people still went home happy. Seriously. Also – having a cake tasting IS important if having good cake is important TO YOU. You can’t just assume that your wedding cake is going to taste good. You can’t just point to the pretty one in the case and say make me one of those, except bigger. What if you don’t like the way it taste but you like the way it looks? Better find that out before your drop that $500 on it right?

I f*cken love wedding cake. I mean sure – I don’t always get to get some because well sometimes there just isn’t enough to go around. I’m supposed to wait for all of the guests to get their piece of cake first, and then I have to offer some to my 2nd/3rd shooter, and then if there’s any left, I can have at it. Oh. And. I. DO. Because come on! It’s wedding cake! IT’S WEDDING CAKE! How many other times do you get to find out what $300, $500, $700 CAKE taste like? ALSO. Different wedding cake types.

$700 CAKE?! Yeah! That sh*t better taste damn good and be pretty for my photos because otherwise you might as well have gone to Publix and just had them wipe off ‘Happy Birthday’ and stick your cake toppers on top. (because Publix cake IS amazing yo!)

Have you ever had $700 cake? I have. LOTS. I’m fancy like that.

Our creative director told me I shouldn’t just write complete nonsense in this post (like I usually do) and that I should at least try to throw in some useful bit of information. So here. Some useful bit of information. Different wedding cake types.

How do you go about creating, picking, deciding on your wedding cake? I don’t know.

Different Wedding Cake Types

But hey – don’t stress out about how your cake looks. Stress out about how it tastes. There are many ‘cake designers’ out there and not all of them know how to make good tasting cakes. And dammit – if you’re going to spend $700 on a cake, it better taste good. Right? RIGHT. Suckas. ALSO. What color do you want your cake? White? That’s classic and formal and romantic and modern. WTF?! I KNOW! You’re like “I just want a big good tasting and pretty wedding cake” and your cake designer is like “oh well would you like a romantic cake? what about a formal one? or how about a formally romantic wedding cake?” Yeah… can you throw in a unicorn with laser eyes? I’d pay $700 for a cake like that. Oh and it has to be a purple unicorn.

The best part about making decisions on your wedding cake? THE CAKE TASTINGS. You know – where you try out the different flavor cakes from a specific cake-maker. Basically an excuse to eat lots of cake on a Wednesday afternoon for no other reason THAN TO EAT CAKE. Getting married is worth it just for that part alone.

I guess you could also have pie instead of a cake. or cupcakes. whatever. this post is about CAKE. Shut up about pie and cupcakes.

Also. Sometimes people have the colors on their cake do that matchy-match thing with the rest of their decor from their wedding. You can do that too. You should do that. It makes everything look nice. And people like nice looking things.

As you can see from these photos – our brides don’t always give a f*ck about the Geneva Cake Convention rules and did whatever they wanted – and they rocked the sh*t out of their wedding cakes. I know I was beating back my assistant for a piece.

Finally – buttercream over fondant ANY and EVERY day. Come on – even the word Buttercream PWNS over the word fondant. (does anyone even say pwns anymore?)

Weddings at Callanwolde Fine Arts

Callanwolde Fine Arts Wedding - Portrait Session

Deciding to have a Callanwolde Fine Arts Wedding is… probably one of the easiest decisions to make when it comes to planning your most amazing wedding. Seriously – if you’d like a classic, traditional and almost fairytale look to your wedding – well there are very few places in the Atlanta area that can fulfill your fantastical dreams like a Callanwolde Fine Arts wedding.

Not only that – but the venue has plenty of room for all of your guests. Whether you want your ceremony outdoors in the garden, or in the main hall with the grand staircase – or out on the patio – you have a lot of options for different configurations both during your ceremony and your reception.

AND – your photographer will love being able to walk you all over the property, to make some unique, artistic and creative photos. Trust me – there are few things that photographers hate more than having to work with a boring venue that just doesn’t have much to work with then it comes to making amazingly beautiful photos. This is not a problem when you have a Callanwolde Fine Arts wedding.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Wedding - portrait session

We’ve photographed many weddings at Callanwolde and not only do they always go off perfectly – they go off EASILY. As in – we see the behind the scenes and what it takes to make sure a wedding and reception go on with no problems. Sometimes the planning crew is running around behind the scenes fixing everything you can think of – and sometimes it’s just ALL GOOD. Weddings at Callanwolde seem to just always be on the ALL GOOD SIDE of things.

And that’s important. Because while you want a wedding team that will handle ANYTHING that comes up – you always want to know that there just won’t be too many problems from the outset anyway. I mean I’ll be honest – some places, some venues, some people are just… it’s… it can be a sh*t show. That may or may not be visible or noticeable to your guests – but it’s best to avoid the situation all together – and I’ll tell you – for whatever reason, Callanwolde Fine Arts weddings are THE BEST and they just go off perfectly. Literally every single wedding we’ve photographed there – was brilliant.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Wedding - exchanging rings

Now whether it’s personal preference or for whatever logistical reason – choosing this venue is basically, always a great idea. You know what I mean? It’s centrally located and you can easily get to anywhere else you need to get to. PLUS… the grounds just look amazing and parking is easy. Ha you laugh when I talk about easy parking – trust me – if you’ve ever had to deal with a nightmare or difficult parking situation – well, you basically end up paying one way or another.

But we don’t need to dwell on things like that! We can dwell on the fact that Callanwolde Fine Arts Weddings are the bomb and yours will be too! Right? RIGHT.

How to Plan an Elopement Wedding

You need an elopement checklist. Here’s the thing with elopements – people usually elope and get married quick(ly)(er) specifically because they don’t want to deal with actually planning a WEDDING. So when you ‘plan’ your elopement – you generally want things to be as simple as possible.

Wait. No. You want things to be SIMPLER THAN POSSIBLE. (At least that sounds cool right?…)

elopement checklist and planning

How to Plan an Elopement Wedding (with an elopement checklist)

Okay! So you don’t really want to PLAN plan your elopement – but you want a few things to actually happen and generally not have it be some kind of sh*tshow right? Yes. Right. Probably. I hope so.

SO first – what do you need for your elopement?

  • Rings! – it’s nice to still exchange wedding bands/rings – so have some and bring them to your ceremony
  • Vows – even if you’ve chosen a super simple courthouse wedding, it’s nice to be able to say a few words of your own to the person you’re promising all your love.
  • Photographer – Amazing photographers are super easy to find now – and there are millions of them. Literally, millions. And TBH you can always find one that will work with your budget and still do a great job. Especially if you’re eloping on a weekday. Seriously – email your favorite wedding photographer and see if they’d be interested in photographing your ceremony, some family formals, and a short portrait session of the two of you – and they’ll give you their fee – which should be considerably less than their full day wedding package. (So you’l want to ask for 3 hours of coverage tops, and during a weekday.)
  • Hair & Makeup – hey you still want to look GREAT
  • Outfit! – See above – you still want to look GREAT – and your photographer will appreciate it!
  • Travel Plans – now that you’re saving a ton by not paying to feed and entertain 150 people – you can spend that money on a great TRIP. So get that wedding ceremony out of the way and plan a great honeymoon – or just get married ON that trip.
  • Flowers! If you want flowers – just go buy flowers. Seriously. I know you were already going to do that anyway. Grocery store or actual florist shop – just go buy a bundle of flowers you like, wrap the stems in some ribbon and pins and DONE. (but don’t tell any florists I said this.)
  • A plan to party with everyone later… – oh yeah – so tell people that you’re eloping right now but you plan on having a BIG actual party with everyone later. That’ll make most people feel better (because you know, what they think about YOUR wedding is Soooooooo important…) and then you’re actually off the hook for the most part. I mean… you don’t actually need to have that big party 6 months down the line. You’ll have been married for 6+ months at that point and you’ll have other things to spend money on/do than feeding and getting 150 people drunk. Or not. Whatevs. It’s cool.

elopement checklist and planning

And there you go! A perfectly sensible elopement checklist. How to plan-ish your elopement! Done. Now go do everything else.
