Friday Night Lights

Leah flies back into Atlanta tonight! I’m sure that she’ll have photos and video and stories to tell of her trip - look, not everyone can blog while they’re away - I mean, you’d have to be quite the geek to do something like that consistently (and I’ve given up fighting the fact and simply embrace it now.) So that means I have all day long to do as much laundry as possible, pick up around the house, go around town and take photos, and generally just move things around. After bumming around Barnes & Noble last night and drinking the appropriate level of too-much-coffee I returned home and after looking through billions of old photos - I decided that hey, I should take some new photos, and then I got it into my head that I wanted cables! and rope! And some hard contrasts a’la Caravaggio’s chiaruscuro (I always have to look up how to spell that.) He’s probably one of my top 3 artists ever - but I have a thing for renaissance art. Oh, Jan Vermeer is in that top three. I’d have to think about who the third one is.

Caravaggio. Painting. Contrasts. Renaissance. Chiaruscuro.

Since my photoshopping skills are limited to adjusting brightness and contrasts - I’m pretty limited. And while other late nite photo endeavors have brought about some fun/interesting/talk about photos - it’s always a fun effort, even when things don’t really work out and I just end up doing nothing with the shots. Ah see, it’s that whole thing where I haven’t taken the time to really learn photography and editing and all that awesomeness that others do. But don’t worry, it’s on my list of 43things remember?

And while I truly wish I had the talent/conviction/determination to make the choice to be some sort of artists - in whatever medium - I’ve only been fortunate enough to have dabbled - to have visited and taken part in a few projects, a few theater plays, and a few short films. But still, it’s all fun. So even though I’ll often tell myself that I’m going to go be all business/math/work minded - I can’t escape the nagging feeling sometimes that hangs around and gnaws at me to create something. Photos are just the easiest right now.

I know that Leah’s the same way. Honestly not full out talented as far as anything artistic - but we have our glimmers where not only are we happy with the product, but that scratching at the back of our heads is satiated for a short while.

Ever get that way? I mean, it seems like many of us do. And these days it’s SO MUCH easier to have an artistic outlet, whether it’s writing, drawing, painting, photo-ing… obviously there are lots of graphic designers out there these days who get to do it everyday. Lucky them! But while I keep going full speed into everything else, I take some comfort in the fact that if I ever need to, I can just throw a towel on a lamp, pull out some weird garbage from the closet, and start taking photos.

I’ll have to get Leah to play along sometime.

*Edit!* - I just found this on YouTube (well, browsing my MySpace friends - I noticed that the director’s myspace had some clips) and I found ME! In this clip at about 1:07 you can see me dressed in ummm… Anime Samurai Gear and tackling another guy - it was for a commercial for an Anime convention out in Phoenix!
